In the Kunwinjku language of West Arnhem Land, the word for didgeridoo is mako.
The story of Bewk Bewk occurred in the dreamtime. The story tells of a man with a very large penis who was having his way with all the women of a tribe. The men of the tribe hunted for him so they could kill him.
Bewk Bewk was setting a trap in the ground near his camp to trap the men hunting him and lost his footing and fell in the trap, breaking his penis off. Bewk Bewk sat there knowing that these men would come for him and kill him, so he started playing his penis (the didgeridoo).
After playing for a while, Bewk Bewk turned into a kite (a bird of prey) and flew off, leaving his broken off penis behind. The men who heard the sounds of the didgeridoo knew that it must have been Bewk Bewk and when they came upon the trap with only the broken penis in it, they realised that he had changed into a dreamtime being.
All of the men were overjoyed with happiness and picked up the didgeridoo, Bewk Bewk’s broken penis, and began playing and celebrating his demise.
